I began my mindfulness journey about four years ago, although prior to that was becoming more mindful of my breath and body through yoga and tai chi. The benefits I have seen for my own mental health and well-being of practicing mindfulness and compassion led me to start on my route to developing as teacher to be able to share it with others. I run, as a volunteer, the Mindfulness in Action Project in Carlisle which provides affordable mindfulness-based activities in the community to help people look after their mental health and well-being. I run its weekly beginner’s mindfulness meditation group. I deliver training sessions to various staff and community groups on well-being and mindfulness. And I provide a monthly qigong class for some ladies attending a well-being support group, originating from a falls group.
In my previous life I have worked as a doctor in clinical and public health medicine, in non-medical roles in research and audit in the NHS and also in the voluntary sector in mental health.
I am a political and community activitist involved particularly in environmental and social justice issues. I also love getting out into nature, walking and cycling, attending live music gigs and stewarding at small local music festivals.
